The common mistake is to treat a finish coat as though more trowelling always makes it better. Good plastering is not simply a matter of polishing harder. It is about mixing to the right consistency, applying the correct amount and using well-timed trowel passes as the plaster sets.

Blisters vs Crazing vs Damp — Telling Them Apart
The word "blistering" is used loosely online, which creates much of the confusion. Three different plaster problems are often grouped together even though they look different and have different causes.
Fresh-skim application blisters
These are small raised bubbles, pimples or shallow blisters in plaster that has only recently been skimmed. They may appear within hours or days, while the wall is still drying. The surface might otherwise look solid and well bonded.
The usual causes are over-trowelling, trapped air, an over-watered mix or trowelling at the wrong point in the set. This is primarily a finish defect. In most cases, the sound plaster underneath does not need to be removed.
Crazing or map cracking
Crazing is made up of fine cracks rather than raised bubbles. It can look like a network, spider web or irregular map across the surface. It is generally associated with shrinkage and drying conditions, such as a mix that is too wet, a coat that dries too quickly or unsuitable thickness and suction conditions.
Crazing is not the same as a fresh-skim blister. Filling bubbles will not address a network of cracks, and treating a crack pattern as damp blistering can send the repair in the wrong direction. Damp or moisture blistering
Damp blistering normally affects an older decorated wall. Paint, wallpaper or a previous finish may lift, bubble and peel because moisture is entering from behind. There may also be staining, a musty smell, salt deposits or a persistently cold and wet area.
It is the age and condition of the finish that provide the first clue. A painted wall that starts bubbling months or years after decorating deserves a moisture investigation. A newly skimmed wall with little bubbles appearing during its first drying period points much more strongly to an application fault.
If you are unsure, look at what is actually raised. A fresh-skim application blister is usually a small, localised surface bubble. Crazing is visibly cracked. Damp blistering is often associated with peeling decoration and signs of moisture. These categories can overlap in appearance from a distance, but the timing usually tells you a great deal.
Is It Ruined? The Tap-and-Dry Test
The first step is patience. Let the plaster dry naturally and fully before judging the repair. Do not put a fan heater, hairdryer or other strong heat source directly against the wall to speed things up. Rapid, uneven drying can create additional problems and makes it harder to judge whether the skim is sound.
The advice we give customers is to wait until the colour is consistently dry and the plaster no longer feels cool or soft in the affected area. Once it is dry, use a light tap with a knuckle or the handle of a tool around the blister.
A firm, relatively solid sound is reassuring. If the area is sound and the blister is only a shallow surface defect, it is normally a cosmetic repair. It can often be scraped or sanded carefully, filled and prepared for decoration.
A hollow sound, movement under light pressure or a section that lifts is different. It may indicate that the skim has lost contact with the background — a form of delamination or debonding. That is the rare case where the affected section may need to be taken off and re-skimmed.
Do not press hard simply to make the blister burst. The aim of the tap test is to compare the affected spot with the surrounding wall, not to damage a finish that may still be sound. A few small bubbles do not mean the whole wall is ruined, and they do not automatically mean a full re-plaster.
How to Fix Blistered Fresh Skim
The appropriate repair depends on how many blisters there are and whether the plaster beneath them is sound.
A few small, firm blisters
Once the skim is fully dry, small isolated blisters can usually be dealt with locally. Carefully remove any loose high spots, fill the shallow depressions with a suitable fine surface filler and allow the filler to dry. Sand it flat without cutting aggressively into the surrounding skim.
The repaired area should then be sealed appropriately before decorating. Fresh plaster and filler have different suction, so applying a suitable mist coat or recommended sealer helps prevent visible flashing where the repair meets the rest of the wall.
This is usually a low-cost, DIY-manageable repair if the affected areas are genuinely small and the surrounding plaster is firm. Do not decorate over active blisters, soft plaster or loose edges and hope they disappear beneath the paint.
Widespread fine blistering
If the wall has fine blistering over much of its surface, filling every individual spot may leave a patchy finish and take longer than applying a new finish coat. A thin re-skim over a sound background is often the cleaner solution.
In Bristol, a typical re-skim of a room may be around £350–£500, although the actual price depends on room size, access, preparation, protection, existing damage and whether ceilings or adjoining walls are included. That is a guide rather than a fixed quotation.
A powdery or weak surface
If the skim is powdery, friable or unusually weak, the issue may involve an over-watered mix or poor drying and suction conditions. The weak surface needs to be assessed and stabilised with an appropriate primer where suitable, or covered with a properly prepared new finish. Painting directly over powdery plaster will not make it sound.
A hollow or lifting patch
A blister that sounds hollow, moves or is visibly lifting should not simply be filled over. The affected section may need to be cut back to sound plaster, removed and re-skimmed properly. This is where the tap test earns its place: it separates a cosmetic surface fault from the uncommon debonded case.

Whose Fault Is It — And What to Say to Your Plasterer
Fresh-skim blistering usually points to an application issue: the mix, the water content, the timing of the trowel passes or over-trowelling of the finish coat. That does not prove exactly what happened, and there can be background or drying factors, but it is reasonable to raise the defect with the plasterer who carried out the work.
A good plasterer should be willing to return and inspect a genuine finish defect. The most constructive approach is to contact them promptly, take clear photographs in natural light and explain when the bubbles appeared. Mention whether the plaster was still drying and whether the affected areas sound firm or hollow now that they have dried.
A message such as this is usually better than an accusation:
"The new skim has developed several small blisters within a day of application. It is now drying, but I would like you to inspect whether these are surface application blisters or any areas of debonding. Could you advise on the appropriate repair?"
Avoid sanding, filling or painting everything before the original plasterer has seen it if you are asking them to put the work right. A few untouched photographs and an opportunity to inspect the dry surface make it easier to agree on what needs doing.
The key point is that a finish defect is not necessarily evidence of poor workmanship in every case, but fresh-skim blistering is a fair issue to raise.
